The Pendleton Area Saddle Club was formed in 1989 by a group of horse lovers who wanted to meet others who shared an interest in horses and to promote horseriding as a family sport through organized activities. Through the years, the purpose of the club has grown to include promoting and practicing trail stewardship through education and related projects and to address public land access issues which affect horse-related activities.

Club Memories

Like any long-standing club, our members have made some incredible memories together. Here are a few of our favorites. If you are a present or past member with a memory you’d like to share, please email us at pascpals@gmail.com.

Dorito the Bear

Pam and Van Smith remember “Dorito” quite well. How could they forget a huge black bear raiding their favorite camping snacks right outside their tent? Yes, tent. Years back, before Pam and Van purchased their horse trailer with living quarters, they camped in a tent with the club. On one trip to Whetstone Horse Camp, a huge black bear visited their site and helped itself to their Doritos. After cleaning out their chips, it headed over to the Dunaway’s trailer where it took a little nap right outside their trailer door. Neighboring campers caught this video of it finishing up its nap before wandering off. Can you imagine Lydia and Robbie’s face if they’d opened up their door before it wandered off???

Dolly takes a Dip

At a recent camping trip to Watson Mill Bridge State Park, the club stopped for lunch right along the river. The park has a water pump installed at the picnic site with a 5 gallon bucket so that riders can easily water their horses. That day, the water pump was not working, so Dolly decided to use the 5 bucket to scoop water out of the river. Suddenly, there was a sharp yelp and a splash. We ran over to the bank to find Dolly in the river hanging onto a tree and the bucket floating down the river. Thank goodness Dolly wasn’t floating down the river with it!! Did I mention this trip was in March! It was a cold, wet ride back!

Soup Day Shenanigans

Donna and Hal Abercrombie fondly remember the first soup ride. Donna laughs when she remembers Butch’s face when everyone showed up to the soup ride with a can of soup….but nothing to cook it in! He took stock of all the various cans of different types of soup and went and grabbed a big pot. He opened all the cans and mixed them all together. She said, surprisingly, it wasn’t half bad. Thank goodness, the saddle club’s annual soup day has progressed and we no longer eat “mystery soup” before our ride!

“Four More Miles”

If you’ve ridden with the saddle club long enough, you’re bound to hear someone yell, “Four More Miles! Everybody smile!” Tom Jones, pictured above, was the man who started this tradition. Every time we hear it, we smile!
